Canterbury and District Enterprise Trust was founded in 1982 with the remit to create work opportunities and provide training for unemployed people.
Through providing socially valuable employment in real businesses, the Trust sought to make some impact on the high unemployment levels of the day and lay foundations for the future of the Canterbury and District area.
Providing training was part of the package – workers with the skills to perform well in their jobs and to progress in their chosen industry were essential to the long term recovery of the district.
Some of the businesses set up by the Trust became extremely successful and no longer belonged in the charity, so another company, Enterprising Opportunities Ltd, was set up. This company is wholly owned by the Trust and provides financial support by Gift Aiding its profits to the charity every year.
