The long term development of Hambrook Marshes has been planned by Kent Wildlife Trust in order to make the site a vital link in the chain of floodplain habitats reaching right to the edge of the city of Canterbury itself. From hay meadows at the Tonford Lane end to fenland and wet woodland at the Whitehall Meadows end, the variety of habitats will form a mosaic that will attract a huge range of wildlife and plants back to the area. We hope to see an increase in amphibians, water voles, water birds, dragonflies and marsh birds. We may even see a return of otters to the banks of the Stour just a mile from the centre of Canterbury.
The management of the site as a commercial enterprise will reflect the importance of biodiversity and conservation. Only traditional farming methods will be used and, eventually, the site will begin to resemble a traditional floodplain environment again.
